Locomotive Building System Ordering Reference these two web-sites for your intended model:
Frame / Walkway Modules Our Frame / Walkway Modules are grouped into two categories: GP D2 34’ Wheelbase Frame / Walkway Module SD D2 43’ 6” Wheelbase Frame / Walkway Module They are then broken into additional variations based on the side sill used. Please use this as a reference to determine applicability: 1) Are you modeling a GP or SD version? 2) Is the side sill a late version? A late version side sill has a uniform top to bottom dimension of five inches and does not have any notched area. If so then pick either MK 4037 for the GP variation or MK 4044 for the SD variation. 3) Now it gets a bit trickier. Let’s finish up the GP versions before we tackle the SD units. If you model an SD version skip to step 8. 4) Next consider the step wells if you cannot meet the criteria above. If you have a GP version to model it may have either narrow or wide platform steps. P1 corresponds to the wide platform steps modeled with DP 6018. P2 reflects the narrow version modeled with DP 6021. If you are building a wide platform step equipped unit that uses DP 6018 go with MK 4034. If you are modeling a narrow platform step equipped units (DP 6021) then you have two choices. If you are modeling a block jack pad equipped locomotive such as those run by the LIRR chose MK 4036. If your locomotive has normal GP style jack pads use MK 4035. 5) Look at the jack pads on your unit. Southern Pacific units and a few others used block type jack pads. We have a side sill to replicate this that works with more standard width step wells. Pick MK 4033 if your unit meets these criteria. 6) If you check out both sides of the locomotive you will find that the terminating point of the rear notch in the side sills is located differently on some units compared to others. C4:E4/5 is meant to read (C) Conductor’s side notch ends under the 4th stanchion from the rear step well. The (E) Engineer’s side is terminating between the 4th and 5th stanchion from the rear step well. This is the most common variation among Dash 2 GP production. If this is what you match to your unit then choose MK 4031. Count your stanchions in sequence with (1) starting beside the rear step well. 7) The remaining options are MK 4030 C4:E4 or MK 4032 C4/5:E4/5. So again, the (C) is Conductor’s side and (E) is the Engineers. 4 equals the terminating notch is under the 4th stanchion from the rear step well. If you have a fractional number such as 4/5 then it means this notch is between the 4th and 5th stanchions from the rear. Pick the right model based on the photographs you find. 8) If you model a SD Short Jack Pad (DP 6193) then you have only two options with a notched side sill. MK 4045 is used if you have a common type (FCO) Fuel Cut Off. Your model with this variation will be MK 4045 C5/6:E6 Late. For an explanation on the meaning of this gibberish reference steps (5) and (6). If you have a (DFCO) Dropped Fuel Cut Off this will show up just under the end of the clean air room in the form of switch that is fish bellied so that it protrudes past the bottom edge of the side sill. Common type versions have the FCO plate flush with the top and bottom edges of the side sill. MK 4046 C5/6:E5/6 DFCO Late is used if you have the DFCO version and the SD Short Jack Pads. 9) We have two variations that cover units with a DFCO and earlier jack pads. They are MK 4041 and MK 4042. MK 4042 seems to more common on later units than MK 4041 but again use our reference for the terminating rear notch in the side sills. MK 4041 is C5:E5 DFCO. MK 4042 is C5/6:E5/6 DFCO. 10) Most guys who model the SD version will have had to read all the way down to this point. MK4043 is the most commonly found variant with the side sill notched C5/6:E6. 11) The leaders of the SD pack but losers due to the length of these instructions are modelers of the MK 4040 version which has the side sill variation of C5:E5. I say leaders because this side sill version appears mostly on older units.
Scale Profile Fuel Tanks Our fuel tanks are pretty straight forward. 1) Find the correct size. We did give an Imperial Gallon calculation in the title of these products based on the US Gallon capacity. This is not an exact match for published data. It is however an online conversion only and use it as a base point. 2) Find the fuel filler location for your model’s prototype. End Fill references the normal fuel filler position being near the front truck. Two End Fill reference units that mount fuel fill locations on each corner of the fuel tank sides. The Missouri Pacific commonly used this configuration. The Center Fill references units that have a central fuel filler and also usually have split air tanks to allow for this feature. 3) Rear Mounted means that the fuel tank is essentially “backwards”. An interesting tidbit to amuse the club goers is that the MILW and KCS use the exact same fuel tank on some SD40-2’s however the end sheet to fuel tank is reversed on the former units. This means that the same distance from the rear plate to the rear of the fuel tank on MILW units is the same as the front sheet to the front of the fuel tank on the KCS units. So to model this we simply provide a “Rear Mounted” Fuel Tank which uses a different photo-etched top plate than the standard 3200 US GAL Fuel Tank. With our mounting system you just have to place the fuel tank 180 degrees from the front mounting position.
Ordering If you are ordering direct you can purchase a bundle option which allows you to purchase a Frame / Walkway Module and Scale Profile Fuel Tank together to match your unit. Place your order by selecting the quantities of the bundle. After you have purchased a bundle, we will email you to request your unit number. We will match the components to your specification before shipment. The Frame / Walkway Module and Scale Profile Fuel Tank Bundles are $46.49 USD.
Additional Items EMD/GMDD units are essentially the same unit. Do not get hung up in the details and minutia of rivet counting and miss the big picture. 90% of all locomotive general arrangements and components within a manufacturing block are similar. It’s the 10% that changes to meet individual customer specifications. Our modeling system is based on this concept. Therefore you can now effectively model the majority of EMD/GMDD second generation Dash 2 Locomotives with our system. By purchasing a Detail Bundle or individual components in our product line you can make the model reflect your own personal preference for your prototype. You can model any variation effectively using add-on accessories and sub-assemblies. A Detail Bundle that consists of the coupler plates, jack pads, pilots, step sets, and tread-plate to match your specific preference. This is what makes the model a NW SD40-2 or a CN SD40-2W. The Detail Bundles are $58.49 USD. Order one per unit. We will match this bundle based on your unit specification and any time period for your locomotive. We have another package the models the under-frame details applied to your locomotive. This is the Under-Frame Detail Bundle. A highlight of this package is that we have the highest quality Air Filters / Air Tanks / Traction Motor Cabling System available. They are based on scale dimensions and the latest tooling ensures a very well detailed model. This is necessary to purchase these items to give you the aesthetic qualities possible with this system. If you are modeling a standard air tank equipped unit, the cost is $22.49 for this package. Variations that use center mounted fuel filler must use either the GP Slit or SD Split bundles. They cost slightly more at $24.49 due to the additional components. DP 6099 MU / Train-line / Cut Lever Brackets works with our pilots to replicate the brackets used to mount the houses on the pilots and the cut lever bar. This kit will model either the three or four MU hose connections and will complete two locomotives. The price on this item is $10.49. Some units use the DP 6100 version as this was common for later type units with MU connections like those found today. The final recommendation is a Cannon & Company Fuel Tank Detail set which we have in stock. If your unit has a waste retention tank select one of our DP 6170 / DP 6171 / DP 6172.
